Tasting notes

This Riserva pours a deep, intense ruby red. On the nose it offers ripe blackberries, plum and cherry jam, underscored by tobacco and warming spice. There are also layers of toasted oak, vanilla, and subtle cocoa that develop with breathing. The palate is full-bodied and soft, with plush tannins cushioning the floral richness. Flavours of cocoa, coffee and vanilla linger long and warm, making it both satisfying and expressive.

“Anniversario 62” refers to the founding year of Cantine San Marzano (1962), and the wine pays tribute to that heritage. It is made from 100% Primitivo, sourced from old vines (some over 60 years old) in Manduria. The wine is aged for 18 months in French and American oak barriques to build its depth and richness.

Serve at around 17-18 °C, ideally after decanting. This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavoured red meats, slow-cooked stews, game, or a robust pasta with meat sauce. aged cheeses also match well, especially those with strong, savory character.

The 2019 vintage has been very well received. Commentaries emphasise its rich fruit intensity, complexity of oak and spice, and how its finish leaves a lasting impression. Many describe it as a wine that balances boldness with refinement.

“Anniversario 62” is a wine for those who want more than just sips, it delivers power, presence and character. With fruit from old vines and well-judged oak ageing, it offers both richness and elegance. It’s ideal both for enjoying now with hearty food and for cellaring to see how those oak and fruit layers further integrate. For lovers of full-bodied reds, this is a high-quality, expressive bottle that justifies the investment.

San Marzano is a small town in the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP, a strip of land between the seas that wash over the Puglia region. It was here that 19 winegrowers founded Cantine San Marzano in 1962. Long before the appellation of origin was created and Primitivo di Manduria was recognised worldwide, they were chasing a dream. Twenty years later, Francesco Cavallo was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors. A volcanic and visionary personality, he remained at the helm for 40 years, planning the future and overseeing the winery’s present.

The commitment and dedication of the cooperative members allowed the purchase of a modern bottling plant in 1996. The first bottles came out of the cellar, triggering the transition from commodity to brand. From bulk economy to a direct relationship with the end consumer. Move forward to 2000 and San Marzano’s iconic label encapsulates its philosophy and essence. Produced from old vines, it is the expression of a thousand-year relationship between the people and the Primitivo grape. Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is the label that has changed the perception of Puglian wines throughout the world. 62 Anniversario builds on that impact with a Riserva version to honour the founders of 1962.

From 60 year old Alberello (bush-vines) in San Marzano and Sava (TA), Salento Puglia. The climate is characterised by high temperatures all year round, very little rainfall and a wide temperature range between night and day, which has a positive influence on the quality of the grapes. This is the central area of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP. Loam soil, finely textured and rich in iron oxides that give the topsoil the distinctive red hue. Calcareous subsoil (limestone) with a few emerging rocks.

Vinification: Grapes are hand-harvested in advanced state of ripening. Destemming and crushing followed by cold soak maceration at 8°C for about 24-48 hours. Thermo-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation for about 10 days with autochthonous yeasts at 24-26°C.

Ageing: Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and then maturation in French and American oak barrels for 18 months.
