This Riserva pours a deep, intense ruby red. On the nose it offers ripe blackberries, plum and cherry jam, underscored by tobacco and warming spice. There are also layers of toasted oak, vanilla, and subtle cocoa that develop with breathing. The palate is full-bodied and soft, with plush tannins cushioning the floral richness. Flavours of cocoa, coffee and vanilla linger long and warm, making it both satisfying and expressive.
“Anniversario 62” refers to the founding year of Cantine San Marzano (1962), and the wine pays tribute to that heritage. It is made from 100% Primitivo, sourced from old vines (some over 60 years old) in Manduria. The wine is aged for 18 months in French and American oak barriques to build its depth and richness.
Serve at around 17-18 °C, ideally after decanting. This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavoured red meats, slow-cooked stews, game, or a robust pasta with meat sauce. aged cheeses also match well, especially those with strong, savory character.
The 2019 vintage has been very well received. Commentaries emphasise its rich fruit intensity, complexity of oak and spice, and how its finish leaves a lasting impression. Many describe it as a wine that balances boldness with refinement.
