Tasting notes

Deep ruby red with violet reflections, this Primitivo opens with an intense fruity bouquet of plum and cherry, spiced subtly and layered with hints of Mediterranean herbs, rosemary, and vanilla. Full-bodied yet remarkably soft and balanced, it’s rich, plush, and effortlessly drinkable.

Produced by the esteemed Cantine San Marzano cooperative, founded in 1962 by 19 family vineyards and now encompassing over 1,200 growers, this wine is sourced from vineyards around 100 meters above sea level on thin clay soils dotted with rocks. After a 10-day temperature-controlled maceration, it’s fermented with selected yeasts in stainless steel and bottled unoaked to preserve its juicy character.

Serve at 16–18 °C. This friendly red is a perfect match for BBQ, pasta with rich tomato sauce, spiced sausages, tapas, and other comfort dishes. An ideal go-to red for casual gatherings.

San Marzano was established back in 1962 when 19 family vine growers joined to combine their resources and expertise, with the aim to produce wines which reflect the region, while embracing modern winery practices. They are now one of the most highly regarded cooperatives in Southern Italy - highlighted when they were awarded European Producer of the Year at the Sommelier Wine Awards 2017, with trained biologist Caterina Bellanova at the helm.

The quality across the range is excellent, and they offer great expressions of local grapes such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, while being very well-priced, making these perfect weekday wines.
