About Felton Road
Felton Road stands among the foremost names in New Zealand wine, especially for lovers of Pinot Noir. Rooted in Bannockburn, Central Otago, its story begins in the early 1990s when Stewart Elms, then fifty-years-old, left behind blackcurrant farming, studied viticulture and wine science at Lincoln University, and planted the Elms Vineyard on a north-facing slope just off Felton Road in Bannockburn.
In 2000 the estate came under the ownership of Nigel Greening, whose background was not in wine but who had a deep passion for Pinot Noir. Alongside winemaker Blair Walter, who has been with Felton Road since its first official vintage in 1997, they committed to building something exceptional. What followed was a steadfast dedication to vineyard ownership (rather than sourcing fruit), organic and biodynamic farming, and wines that unmistakably express place.
Viticulture, Philosophy & Terroir
Felton Road spans several estate vineyards (Elms, Cornish Point, MacMuir, Calvert) each with distinct soils, microlimates and aspects. The soils are generally free-draining, low in fertility, and well suited to cool climate varieties.
Since 2002 the vineyards have been farmed organically and biodynamically. The estate has Demeter certification, among other credentials. Biodynamic preparations are made in-house, composts and ferments are carefully constructed, cover crops and flowering species are sown between vine rows to enhance soil health and biodiversity, and invertebrates, pasture and animals (goats, chickens) form part of the ecosystem. The team works according to the lunar calendar when scheduling many vineyard tasks.
Reputation & Style
Felton Road has built an international reputation for Pinot Noir of precision, depth, purity and complexity. The wines tend to marry expressive fruit with refined structure, often showing touches of earth, spice and mineral detail, alongside elegant oak framing. Vintage variation is embraced rather than masked. The wines are designed both for enjoyment in their early years and for graceful aging.
Though highly sought after, Felton Road has resisted growth for growth’s sake. Its business model remains focused on estate-grown fruit, limited production, and distributing globally but with exclusivity and integrity.
