Tasting notes

This wine pours an intense ruby red. The nose is wide and complex, bursting with prune and cherry jam aromas, mingled with tobacco, vanilla, and toasted spice. On the palate it is full-bodied with richness and depth, soft yet firm elegant tannins, and a well-balanced structure. The finish lingers with layers of cocoa, coffee and vanilla, rounding the fruit and oak into a satisfying conclusion.

Sessantanni is made from Primitivo grapes grown on venerable old vines, at least sixty years old, trained in the traditional Alberello system. After harvest the grapes undergo malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, then aged for 12 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels. The oak gives structure and spice while preserving the bold fruit and intensity Puglia is known for.

Serve around 17-18 °C. This wine is a great match for robust red meats (grilled or roasted), game-based dishes, rich ragù, or even for pairing with matured cheeses and dark chocolate. Its power and full-bodied profile stand up well to bold flavours.

The 2019 Sessantanni has been awarded scores around 91 points by several sources. It is praised for its full-bodied richness, the complex interplay of dark fruit, oak and spice, and the elegant, lasting finish. Comments frequently highlight its balance, bold yet polished.

Sessantanni Old Vines 2019 is not just pruned fruit and oak, but a wine with soul, its old vines add depth, its oak adds spice, and its finish is long enough to toast slow evenings. If you want a Primitivo that feels premium, intense, and worthy of savoring rather than rushing, this delivers exactly that.

San Marzano is a small town in the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP, a strip of land between the seas that wash over the Puglia region. It was here that 19 winegrowers founded Cantine San Marzano. Long before the appellation of origin was created and Primitivo di Manduria was recognised worldwide, they were chasing a dream. In 1982, Francesco Cavallo was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors. A volcanic and visionary personality, he remained at the helm for 40 years, planning the future and overseeing the winery’s present.

The commitment and dedication of the members allowed the purchase of a modern bottling plant in 1996. The first bottles came out of the cellar, triggering the transition from commodity to brand. From bulk economy to a direct relationship with the end consumer. Move forward to 2000 and San Marzano’s iconic label encapsulates its philosophy and essence. Produced from old vines, it is the expression of a thousand-year relationship between the people and the Primitivo grape. Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is the label that has changed the perception of Puglian wines throughout the world.

From 60 year old Alberello (bush-vines) in San Marzano and Sava (TA), Salento Puglia. The climate is characterised by high temperatures all year round, very little rainfall and a wide temperature range between night and day, which has a positive influence on the quality of the grapes. This is the central area of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP. Loam soil, finely textured and rich in iron oxides that give the topsoil the distinctive red hue. Calcareous subsoil (limestone) with a few emerging rocks.

Vinification: Grapes are hand-harvested in advanced state of ripening. Destemming and crushing followed by cold soak maceration at 8°C for about 24-48 hours. Thermo-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation for about 10 days with autochthonous yeasts at 24-26°C.

Ageing: Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and then maturation in French and American oak barrels for 12 months.
