Muga's standard Reserva is one of Rioja's most reliable wines, showcasing the family's traditional approach to winemaking. Fermented in oak vats and aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels from their own cooperage. The 2020 vintage was exceptional in Rioja, producing wines with ripe fruit, structure and freshness. Predominantly Tempranillo with supporting roles from Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano.
Red cherry, strawberry and plum with vanilla, cinnamon and a touch of leather. Medium bodied with smooth tannins and bright acidity keeping everything lifted. The oak is present but not overwhelming, adding spice and texture without masking the fruit. There's savoury complexity developing already with hints of tobacco and earth.
Serve at room temperature (16-18°C). No decanting needed but won't hurt if you have time. Excellent with tapas, grilled meats, cured ham, aged cheese, or tomato-based dishes. Drinking beautifully now, will continue to develop over 8-10 years.

Bodegas Muga is a family business founded by Isaac Muga and Aurora Caño in 1932, located in the historic Barrio de La Estación (Station Quarter) of Haro. It is home to both the most traditional winemaking methods and the latest cutting-edge techniques. They are the only cellar in Spain with a master cooper and three in-house barrel-makers.
Bodegas Muga vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses, within the area called Rioja Alta. The site climate is exceptional due to, on the one hand, the singular geography and orientation of the vines and on the other hand, the surrounding climates – Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climates are combined harmoniously thus creating a suitable climate for growing top quality grapes.
The soil in this area is mostly clay and limestone, divided into small terroirs with different physical and chemical qualities between them; each terroir has a unique and defined personality. This variety of climatic influences and different soils influence many stages of the vine growth cycle. The growth will be complex and delicate, key to the potential quality of the wines in this area.
The grape varieties grown are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano for the red wines; and Viura and Malvasia are used for the white wines.
Reserva 2020
Manual harvesting. Fermentation in wooden vats with controlled temperatures. Aged for 24 months in casks made in our own coopers’ workshop with selection of the sources. The origin of the wood is 80% French oak and 20% American. Before bottling the wine is fined using fresh egg whites. It then spends a minimum of 12 months in our bottle cellar to give it greater complexity and finesse.
This wine will be an excellent accompaniment to meat dishes like a ribeye steak, as well as with charcuterie and all kinds of casseroles.
