Protos is best known for their Ribera del Duero reds, but they also make excellent Verdejo in neighbouring Rueda, Spain's premier region for the grape. Made from vineyards in Rueda using the same quality-focused approach as their flagship wines. This is unoaked, focused purely on expressing clean fruit and the grape's natural aromatics. The 2023 vintage is vibrant and fresh.
Citrus and green apple with white peach, subtle tropical notes and a herbal lift. Crisp and refreshing with lively acidity and a clean, mineral finish. Medium-bodied with enough texture to be interesting but light enough for easy drinking. Bone-dry in the classic Rueda style.
Serve well chilled (6-8°C). Brilliant as an aperitif or with tapas, grilled fish, seafood, salads, or soft goat's cheese. Drink young and fresh - this is about vibrancy, not aging. Enjoy within 1-2 years.

Founded in 1927 by 11 forward-thinking locals, the Protos winery, the first in Ribera del Duero, has an attitude of constant improvement with the sole aim of crafting the best possible wine. For the last 10 years, Protos has been studying every plot of land it owns, observing how Tempranillo clones adapt and change in each location to gain a deeper understanding of the vine, and ultimately craft the best expression of each terroir. The vineyard area spans an enormous 1,400 hectares throughout the Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Cigales DO’s, with some of the vines aged at between 50 and 100 years old. The soils are a mixture of loam-clay-sand, as well as some limestone and silt. The winery at Bodegas Protos was designed in 2008 by Rogers Stirk Harbour and is an architectural delight – well worth a visit if you find yourself in Ribera del Duero!
In 2024, Bodegas Protos ranked in the '50 Most Admired Wine Brands in the World' by the prestigious Drinks International magazine.
The name Protos ’27 is in homage to the 11 visionaries that founded Protos in 1927. From 50-year-old vines, 100% Tinta del País aka Tempranillo, this delicious, expressive wine spends 16 months in new French oak and 12 months in bottle prior to its release.
