Tasting notes

The 2019 pours a deep, inky ruby. Aromas are intense and layered: black cherry, blackberry and plum sit alongside thyme, rosemary, cracked pepper and a subtle smoky note. On the palate it is full-bodied and structured, with ripe, concentrated fruit balanced by firm but finely textured tannins. There’s a savoury, saline edge and a cool mineral backbone that keep the richness in check, carrying through to a long, resonant finish with spice and dark fruit lingering.

Cuvée l’Oumage is sourced from old vines rooted in the famously stony, iron-rich soils of Vacqueyras “sang des cailloux,” or blood of the stones. The blend is dominated by Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre, farmed with a strong commitment to organic principles and minimal intervention. Fermentation and élevage are handled gently to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression, with restrained oak influence used to support structure rather than dominate. The 2019 vintage delivered excellent ripeness and balance, resulting in a wine of depth, energy and longevity.

Serve at 16–18 °C, ideally after decanting. This wine is superb with slow-cooked lamb, beef short ribs, game, or hearty Mediterranean dishes rich in herbs and olive oil. It also shines alongside aged cheeses, where its structure and savoury notes can fully unfold.

The 2019 vintage has been widely acclaimed, with multiple reviews clustering in the 94–96 point range. Commentators consistently highlight its concentration, purity of fruit and sense of place, praising the balance between power and freshness and noting its long, mineral-driven finish. Many describe it as one of the standout expressions of Vacqueyras from the vintage.

Cuvée l’Oumage 2019 is a benchmark Southern Rhône red: serious, expressive and built to impress. It offers the depth and intensity of top Grenache-led blends, but with a refined edge and unmistakable terroir character. Whether you’re looking to cellar a few bottles or enjoy a truly memorable Rhône wine with food, this is a confident, high-quality choice that delivers well beyond expectations.

Founded in 1975, Domaine Le Sang des Cailloux took off with the arrival of Serge Férigoule. Hired in the 80s as an agricultural worker, Serge became owner of the estate in 1990 with a clear vision: to abandon chemical products for a viticulture that was more respectful of nature. His choices initiated a transition to a new era.

In 2003, his son Frédéri joined the family adventure. Self-taught and driven by a strong commitment to their terroir, they obtained organic certification in 2007. Three years later, they led the estate towards biodynamics, an avant-garde approach in the region. Today, alongside his wife, Marion, he upholds Le Sang des Cailloux as an essential benchmark of the Vacqueyras appellation.

Le Sang des Cailloux is located in the southern Rhône Valley, on the Garrigues plateau. In the background, the Dentelles de Montmirail offer a sublime panorama. Its 17 hectare vineyard extends over land where 15 hectares of red grape variety vines and 2 hectares of white grape variety vines are mixed, planted in co-plantation. The vines, planted on clay-limestone soils covered with pebbles (“cailloux” in French), inspired the poetic name of the estate. This unique geological composition gives the wines a unique minerality and a remarkable aromatic depth.

With an average age of 50 years, the estate’s vines, some planted over 80 years ago, testify to a precious heritage. The main grapes are Grenache, Syrah, and to a lesser extent, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan and Counoise, which faithfully reveal the typicity of the Vacqueyras appellation.
