San Felice is one of Chianti Classico's most respected producers, with vineyards in the heart of the region between Siena and the Chianti hills. Gran Selezione is the top tier of Chianti Classico, requiring stricter vineyard selection and longer aging than standard Riserva. This 2016 has spent years in bottle developing tertiary complexity, released only when the estate deemed it ready to drink.
Sour cherry and dried cranberry with leather, tobacco, dried herbs and earthy notes. Medium bodied with silky tannins softened by age. The fruit has evolved beyond primary freshness into something more savoury and complex. There's still bright acidity typical of Sangiovese, but it's wrapped in a mature, harmonious package with a long, refined finish.
Serve at room temperature (16-18°C). No need to decant, this is ready to drink. Excellent with aged Parmigiano, wild mushroom dishes, roasted meats, or Tuscan bean stews. At its peak now but will hold another 5-8 years for those who prefer even more development."

A large estate, with 180 hectares of immaculately maintained vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga, which lies adjacent to its sister property Villa la Pagliaia. The wines at both are made by Leonardo Bellacini, a master of the 'non interventionist' approach, giving classic expressions of high quality Sangiovese, restrained and complex and with great balance and depth. The secret lies in high quality grapes from exceptional vineyards, driven by an intensive research programme, in particular by selection of the best naturally occuring clones. The resulting wines are understated but satisfying, unencumbered by new oak, Cabernet or flashy winemaking. Gran Selezione is a new classification for only the very best wines of Chianti Classico - and this wine, produced from San Felice's best plots of old vine Sangiovese, has been highly praised.
