Deep ruby-hued in the glass, Il Grigio 2016 opens with classic Sangiovese aromas: underbrush, blue flower, wild berry, and crushed herbs. The palate is savoury and smooth, delivering juicy black cherry, cassis, dark spice, and tobacco, with refined tannins and fresh acidity for balance. Elegant, long, and well structured.
This Gran Selezione stems from estate-grown grapes aged for a minimum of 30 months, a designation that demands the best of the vineyard. Aging includes 24 months split between large Slavonian oak ovals and small French oak barriques, followed by several months of bottle rest, adding depth, finesse, and cellar readiness.
Serve slightly below room temperature (16–18 °C). Exceptional with roast meats, game, hearty stews, or aged cheeses that highlight its layered fruit and structured elegance.

A large estate, with 180 hectares of immaculately maintained vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga, which lies adjacent to its sister property Villa la Pagliaia. The wines at both are made by Leonardo Bellacini, a master of the 'non interventionist' approach, giving classic expressions of high quality Sangiovese, restrained and complex and with great balance and depth. The secret lies in high quality grapes from exceptional vineyards, driven by an intensive research programme, in particular by selection of the best naturally occuring clones. The resulting wines are understated but satisfying, unencumbered by new oak, Cabernet or flashy winemaking. Gran Selezione is a new classification for only the very best wines of Chianti Classico - and this wine, produced from San Felice's best plots of old vine Sangiovese, has been highly praised.
