Greywacke is the project of Kevin Judd, who spent 25 years as founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay before launching his own label in 2009. The focus is on expressing Marlborough terroir through wild yeast fermentation and minimal intervention, creating Sauvignon Blanc with more texture and complexity than typical examples. Fermented in old oak to add weight without overt oak flavour. The 2024 vintage shows vibrant aromatics with distinctive depth.
Passionfruit, grapefruit and lime with subtle tropical notes and a mineral edge. Medium bodied with bright acidity and textured mouthfeel from wild yeast and lees contact. There's more weight and complexity here than standard Marlborough Sauvignon, showing layers beyond simple fruit expression. Hints of flint and wet stone. Long, precise finish.
Serve cool (10-12°C), not ice cold, to appreciate the texture. Pairs well with seafood, grilled fish, goat's cheese, or Asian cuisine. Drinking beautifully now, will develop further over 2-4 years unlike most Sauvignon Blanc.

His first release in 2009 saw wide-spread acclaim and since then, every vintage has been as successful, firmly placing Greywacke on the "key New Zealand producers" map.
