Spain has more land under vine than any other country, and it’s come a long way from cheap and cheerful. Rioja is still the name everyone knows, but Ribera del Duero now makes some of Europe’s most sought-after reds, from Vega Sicilia’s Alión to Aalto and Dominio de Pingus’ PSI. In Catalonia, the steep slate slopes of Priorat produce dense, powerful wines in tiny quantities.
The whites are worth just as much attention. Albariño from Rías Baixas is fresh and saline, made for seafood; Verdejo and Godello are rounder; and Txakoli from the Basque Country is light, zesty and slightly spritzy. Add Cava for traditional-method fizz without the Champagne price tag, and pale Spanish rosado, and you’ve got a country you could drink from all year.
