White wine covers more ground than most people give it credit for. At one end are crisp, unoaked wines built on freshness and acidity: Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough and the Loire, Albariño from Rías Baixas, Picpoul de Pinet, Vinho Verde and Pinot Grigio. At the other are rounder, more textured wines like oaked Chardonnay, Viognier, Chenin Blanc and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These have the weight to stand up to roast chicken, creamy sauces and richer fish.
In between sit aromatic grapes like Riesling, which can be anything from bone dry to properly sweet. Not sure where to start? Filter by grape or country, or try one of our food pairing collections.
