Tasting Notes

Slurp Wines NR

Château Suduiraut is a First Growth Sauternes, classified in 1855 alongside Yquem, Rieussec and Climens. The estate has 90 hectares of vines on gravelly clay soils in the heart of the appellation, ideally positioned for the morning mists that encourage noble rot. The 2019 vintage in Sauternes was outstanding, with perfect conditions for botrytis development producing wines of great concentration and purity. Apricot, honey and candied citrus peel with notes of saffron, orange blossom and quince. Lusciously sweet but balanced by bright acidity that keeps it from cloying. Medium to full bodied with silky texture and extraordinary length. There`s complexity here beyond just sweetness: layers of spice, dried fruit and minerality that will develop beautifully over decades. Serve chilled (8-10°C) with foie gras, blue cheese, fruit tarts, or simply on its own as a dessert. This will age gracefully for 20-30+ years, developing darker marmalade and caramel notes. Château Suduiraut was classed as a Premier Cru in 1855 and the property still possesses some of the finest terroirs in Sauternes. Hand crafted at every stage, it reveals remarkable finesse and complexity and a deep, golden colour. With age, the bright gold evolves to a dark amber colour. With a very long life-span, it powerfully and harmoniously combines fruit and floral aromas with candied fruit and roasted nutty notes. Château Suduiraut took its name in 1580 on the marriage of Nicole d'Allard to Léonard de Suduiraut. The château was plundered and burned down during the Fronde insurrection, then rebuilt in the XVII century. It was re-named Cru du Roy in the late 18th century on being taken over by a nephew of the Suduiraut family, Jean Joseph Duroy, Baron of Noaillan. The family home then acquired a cartouche featuring the Suduiraut and Duroy coats of arms, which was to give rise to the escutcheon used by Château Suduiraut today. The property was planted with magnificent formal gardens, designed by Le Nôtre, King Louis XIV's renowned gardener. AXA Millésimes acquired Château Suduiraut in 1992 with the aim of preserving and perpetuating the estate's remarkable tradition of vineyard management and winemaking. Inspired by the great Suduiraut wines of the past, the new management has enabled this great vineyard to fulfil its full potential in recent years.
