Italy grows hundreds of native grapes, and almost every region has its own. That’s what makes it so rewarding to explore: you can drink your way from the Alps to the heel of the boot and barely repeat yourself.
In the north-east you’ll find Prosecco, Soave from Pieropan and Valpolicella Ripasso. Piedmont gives us Barbera d’Alba and Gavi, and Tuscany everything from Chianti Classico to Tenuta San Guido, the estate behind Sassicaia. Head south for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Aglianico from Campania and rich old-vine Primitivo from Puglia. Don’t miss the curiosities either, like sparkling red Lambrusco Grasparossa and Verdicchio from the Marche. Most Italian wines are made with food in mind, so think about what’s on the table when you choose.
