Tikves Kratosija Crveno is a great value red that doesn’t disappoint, with its bright aromas of redcurrants, cherries and red berries, moderate acidity and smooth, rounded texture. It’s fresh but sumptuously juicy and vibrant, with no oak influence.

If the Kratosija (pronounced Krat-oh-SHEE-ya) grape isn’t on your radar yet then it definitely should be. It is thought to have the same genetic origins as Italy’s Primitivo grape (or Zinfandel as it’s known in the US) and we can certainly detect similarities. It has a massive fan following in Macedonia, where it has been planted since ancient times and it produces excellent fruity wines that pair incredibly well with barbecued foods.

The award-winning Tikves Winery, which was founded in 1855, is named after the Tikves wine region in North Macedonia, which is proud of its centuries-old winemaking tradition using native grape varieties. Its sun-drenched vineyards also experience cold continental winters, which enable the winery’s talented winemakers to produce wines with great purity and freshness, with intense aromas and a fruit-forward character.
