Tasting Notes

Slurp Wines NR

Tenuta San Guido is the legendary estate behind Sassicaia, the wine that launched the Super Tuscan movement in the 1970s. Guidalberto is their more accessible bottling, blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the same quality focus as Sassicaia but from younger vines and different parcels. This sees oak aging in French barriques before release. The 2022 vintage is recent, offering fresh fruit with excellent structure. Blackcurrant, black cherry and plum with cedar, graphite and subtle herbal notes. Medium to full bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. There`s concentration and depth here with classic Bolgheri character. Elegant rather than powerful, showing restraint and balance. Well-integrated oak adds complexity without dominating. Long, refined finish. Decant for 45-60 minutes if drinking now. Pairs excellently with grilled steaks, roast lamb, game, or aged Tuscan cheeses. Serve around 16-18°C. Drinking well now but built to age gracefully over 10-12 years [Slurp Wines, 05/06/2026]

Tenuta San Guido is named after the saint, Guido della Gherardesca, who lived during the 11th century. It is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the Maremma area made famous by Italian Nobel prize winner Giosuè Carducci and it stretches for 13 km from the sea to the hills. The Sassicaia wine, the Razza Dormello-Olgiata thoroughbred stud farm and the Bird Sanctuary Padule di Bolgheri are the three defining aspects of the property. They divide the estate between the Padule on the coast, the horse training grounds on the plain, and the vineyards planted up to 350 meters on the hills. The latter have been given their own DOC, the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, the first, and so far, only case in Italy of a DOC contained in one estate.
