Tasting Notes

Slurp Wines NR

Bodegas Navajas is a family winery in Rioja`s Najerilla Valley, producing traditional-style wines with extended oak aging. Gran Reserva requires minimum five years of aging before release, with at least two in oak, though many producers exceed these requirements. The 2014 vintage in Rioja was excellent, producing structured wines built for the long haul. A decade later, this is showing beautiful maturity Cherry and plum now evolved into leather, tobacco and dried fig with vanilla, cedar and earthy notes. Medium bodied with soft, silky tannins fully integrated. The fruit has moved completely into tertiary territory with mushroom, game and forest floor character. There`s still freshness underneath keeping it lively. Classic mature Rioja showing why Gran Reserva commands patience. Long, savoury finish. Serve at room temperature (16-18°C). Handle gently if there`s sediment. Pairs beautifully with roast lamb, aged Manchego, braised oxtail, or simply enjoy the evolution on its own. Drinking at its peak now, will hold another 3-5 years. Bodegas Navajas is a family winery that was founded in 1918 as Bodegas Arjona, but in 1983 became Bodegas Navajas after the Navajas family became the sole stock holders. The year 2000 was a turning point in the estate's history as they invested in enlarging their storage facilities, and in 2005 they reinvested in a new barrel-aging area resulting in a winery with the most modern facilities and a cellar equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the treatment and care of their wines. Navaja's family believe that the quality of the wine begins in the vineyards and for this reason they monitor their vineyards, both in La Riojas Alta and Baja with meticulous attention to detail, and care is taken at every stage of the wine-making process to produce classic, structure wines.
