Zensa Primitivo Organic 2018

A full, dense and rich wine with intense, sweeta nd ripe fruits.
Zensa Primitivo is made by Alessandro Michelon of Orion Wines, he is one of Italy's most innovative and promising winemakers with a profound knowledge of the many wine regions in Italy. Together with Luca Pomaro he works closely with their chosen growers to produce wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the particular region where they are grown. Zensa means "without" or "to do without" in Italian, and this superb organic Primitivo is made without pesticides and fertilisers. The grapes are sourced from organic vineyards in Puglia where the vines are grown as free-standing bush vines. 100% Primitivo grapes are harvested by hand into small wooden crates. The crates are then placed in aerated lofts for 2 to 3 weeks to dry the grapes out. During this process, known as Appassimento [a process famously used to produce the far more costly Amarone wines], the grapes lose about 30% of their weight. This means that the flavours, aromas and natural sweetness are all much more concentrated than in standard wine production.

Tasting Notes

A big, poweful dark red in colour. Aromas of plums, black cherries, chocolate, dried fruit and slight herbaceous notes. Plum and spice flavours on the palate follow through to the long, full finish. Great with hearty casseroles, game or rustic Italian dishes.
