Weltevrede Vanilla Chardonnay 2015
A classic Chardonnay style, lovingly oaked and with a rich vanilla finish
The Jonker family has lived on Weltevrede since 1912. The estate was founded by Klaas Jonker, whose pioneering soul led him to plant the first vines in the area. In the 1930’s Weltevrede was inherited by his son, Japie Jonker, who in 1933 began wine farming on Weltevrede. Japie expanded the winery of Weltevrede to accommodate the growing grape production. The third generation, Lourens Jonker is one of the pioneering figures of the South African wine industry establishing a legacy as chairman of the KWV and serving on several industry bodies, today the estate is run by his son Philip.
Today Weltevrede still has the old vines originally planted by the founder of this estate. Five generations of Jonkers have tasted the fruit of these same vines, a symbol of a blessed family history deeply rooted in the foundations of Weltevrede. The Chardonnay vines for this wine are nestled in broken shale soil and grapes with peachy flavours are selected for good flavour intensity. Carefully selected oak is chosen for the months of maturation. White oak roasted at specific temperatures releases vanillin which marries with the tropical Chardonnay fruit to push the vanilla-like flavours to the front.
A lemon-gold colour in the glass, on the nose there are tropical fruits such as melon, mango, peach, pineapple and passion-fruit with butterscotch, crème brulee and a distinct note of Vanilla. Flavours follow through on the palate with peaches, a touch of zesty citrus and the pleasant, warming flavour of Vanilla on the finish.
