Vionta Albarino Rias Baixas 2017/18
A delicious fragrant, fresh and zesty Albarino from Spain's premium Rias Baixas DO in the Galicia region.
From the excellent 2017 vintage, this is a fresh and zesty Albarino with generous floral and peach aromas. The palate is full-bodied with fresh acidity bursting with peach and citrus fruit, green apple, kiwi and melon flavours. The wine finishes long and aromatic. This is a wonderful match for fish and shellfish, and also stands up well to spicy and smoked dishes.
Vionta is named after an island off Spain's Atlantic coast, and is a quintessential representation of Albariño from Rías Baixas. The estate is in Vilanova de Arousa in the Salnés Valley, the most northern and so coolest subzone of Rías Baixas. Now part of the Ferrer Family Vineyards under ownership of Freixenet, their expertise and winemaker Adolfo Heredia's skill ensures this is a briliantly made example. The slow, cool fermentation process keeps the wine fresh and crisp, while ageing on its yeast lees for a minimum of 6 months helps create a fuller-bodied and complex wine.
The DO Rías Baixas is widely regarded as the finest white wine region of Spain. Located above Portugal, the region features deep, wide inlets of sea water called “rías” that run inland from the Atlantic, creating a mild, rainy maritime climate. Here the Albarino grape excels, which is most similar to Viognier in style but with a fresher zesty balance to the ripe peach flavours.
