Tikveš 'Barovo' Single Vineyard 2016
Decanter World Wine Awards Platinum - 97pts
'Barovo' is a blend of two indigenous Macedonian grapes Kratoshija 65% which has the same genetic origins as Italian Primitivo, and Vranec 35% which translates as 'black stallion' and is known for creating rich, opulant wines. This wine features complex and elegant aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries combine with subtle hints of vanilla and toasty notes. It is beautifully textured with a mouth-filling palate of ripe berry fruits against a mineral backdrop and a long lasting finish. A perfect match for grilled meats or sausage casserole. Drink now or savour for many years to come.
Macedonia as a winemaking region had been long established even in the days of Alexander the Great and is a natural paradise of vineyards, mountains, lakes and rivers, with a climate perfectly suited to producing quality grapes, but turmoil in this area over the past few decades have seen Macedonian wines fall off the map. The Tikveš Winery however has been keeping winemaking traditions alive since 1885. Located in the Tikveš region of central Macedonia, the Tikveš estate sustainably cultivates indigenous varieties such as Smederevka, Vranec and Kratoshija. The grapes are vinified in the state-of-the-art cellar equipped with the latest technology under the watchful eye of illustrious consultant oenologist Philippe Cambie, resulting in a series of authentic and characterful wines.
