The Nikka 12 Year Old Whisky
An exquisite and complex 12 year old whisky crafted by multi award winning Japanese producer
Masataka Taketsuru was trained in his family's sake brewery but it was Scotch whisky that captured his imagination and he decided to dedicate his life to it. In 1918, Taketsuru travelled from Japan to Scotland, where he learnt the secrets of whisky-making. In 1934, he established Nikka Whisky and built its first whisky distillery called Yoichi on the island of Hokkaido. Taketsuru’s growing success allowed him to establish a second distillery, Miyagikyo, in 1969 on the main island of Honshu.
Nikka Whisky has become a fixture in Japan and throughout Europe, known for its passion for craftsmanship, quality and flavour. Masataka Taketsuru passed away just 10 years after the construction of Miyagikyo, at the age of 85. He forever remains the founding father of Japanese whisky, and to this day, Taketsuru’s spirit continues to live on through the Nikka blending team, whose quest for excellence in Nikka whiskies perpetuates his memory.
Gold with an orange hue. The nose is sleek and refined. A perfect balance of fruits, malted barley, beeswax and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and citrus. The palate is lively and serene. Dark chocolate provides the backbone of mouth-watering bitterness. Malted barley extends to earthier notes, followed by fresh fruits (apple, prunes, plums, pear) followed by honeyed and floral notes. The finish is long and complex with red berries and notes of tobacco and liquorice on the background. This gives way to candied fruit and a lovely freshness.
