Solar Viejo is a Rioja winery with over 75 years of history, and is situated near the medieval village of Laguardia. The original winery was founded in one of the emblematic manors of Laguardia, within the walled enclosure of the villa while the new facilities, built over 30 years ago, are in the vicinity of the town and preserve the essence of that original experience. The vineyards are protected by the cold winds of the Rioja Alavesa, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria and it is here that the excellent quality grapes are grown.
Winemaker Vanesa Insausti has grown-up making Rioja and gained experience making wines all across the region before settling at Solar Viejo in 2007. Vanesa's aim is always to make the highest quality wines from the very best fruit. Our Solar Viejo six bottle mixed case contains:

2 x Solar Viejo Rioja Tempranillo 2017 - This Tempranillo is intense ruby red with flashes of violet in the glass, on the nose there is a heady mix of aromas such as raspberry, strawberry and cherry, alongside a certain vegetable note, indicating its youth. Delicate on the palate, with lower tannins. Balanced, with good acidity giving it a refreshing feel, creating a versatile wine, appropriate for many different occasions. Drink now or over the next few years.
2 x Solar Viejo Rioja Crianza 2016 - A blend of base wines made from Tempranillo, aged in American and French oak barrels for 12 months. Rich in oak aromas such as vanilla, ground coffee and spices. The palate continues where the nose leaves with the addition of violet and fruity notes of raspberries and ripe strawberries. It has good tannin levels and mouthfeel, which are both smooth and give the wine a certain power and vitality, and which will ensure good development over time. Good length, with medium acidity.
2 x Solar Viejo Rioja Reserva 2013 - A blend of Tempranillo and Graciano grapes aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels followed by a long period of bottle ageing. Still intensely youthful cherry red, with little colour loss, due to the good tannin levels, and the meticulous winemaking.
This wine delivers aromas of black fruit and hints of stone fruit such as peach, there are also noticeable floral aromas of violet. After a little swirling in the glass, the nose becomes even more complex developing classic aromas of chocolate, coffee and spices.The palate follows the nose with red fruits and has good rounded structure, with marked tannins, resulting in a tasty, elegant wine, with a long finish.
