Solar Viejo Rioja Reserva 2013
Solar Viejo Reserva is a great value, perfect expression of the power and depth of Rioja
Solar Viejo is a Rioja winery with over 75 years of history, and is situated near the medieval village of Laguardia. The original winery was founded in one of the emblematic manors of Laguardia, within the walled enclosure of the villa while the new facilities, built over 30 years ago, are in the vicinity of the town and preserve the essence of that original experience. The vineyards are protected by the cold winds of the Rioja Alavesa, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria and it is here that the excellent quality grapes are grown.
Winemaker Vanesa Insausti has grown-up making Rioja and gained experience making wines all across the region before settling at Solar Viejo in 2007. Vanesa's aim is always to make the highest quality wines from the very best fruit.
A blend of Tempranillo and Graciano grapes aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels followed by a long period of bottle ageing. Still intensely youthful cherry red, with little colour loss, due to the good tannin levels, and the meticulous winemaking.
This wine delivers aromas of black fruit and hints of stone fruit such as peach, there are also noticeable floral aromas of violet. After a little swirling in the glass, the nose becomes even more complex developing classic aromas of chocolate, coffee and spices. The palate follows the nose with red fruits and has good rounded structure, with marked tannins, resulting in a tasty, elegant wine, with a long finish.
