Solar Viejo Rioja Crianza 2016
A great value Crianza aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels
Solar Viejo is a Rioja winery with over 75 years of history, and is situated near the medieval village of Laguardia. The original winery was founded in one of the emblematic manors of Laguardia, within the walled enclosure of the villa while the new facilities, built over 30 years ago, are in the vicinity of the town and preserve the essence of that original experience. The vineyards are protected by the cold winds of the Rioja Alavesa, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria and it is here that the excellent quality grapes are grown.
Winemaker Vanesa Insausti has grown-up making Rioja and gained experience making wines all across the region before settling at Solar Viejo in 2007. Vanesa's aim is always to make the highest quality wines from the very best fruit.
A blend of base wines made from Tempranillo, aged in American and French oak barrels for 12 months. Rich in oak aromas such as vanilla, ground coffee and spices. The palate continues where the nose leaves with the addition of violet and fruity notes of raspberries and ripe strawberries. It has good tannin levels and mouthfeel, which are both smooth and give the wine a certain power and vitality, and which will ensure good development over time. Good length, with medium acidity.
