Sendiäna Grand Vin Rouge 2013 Lebanon
A vibrant red wine with fine perfumed aromas of ripe blackberries and a hint of spice, made in a Monastery on Mount Lebanon
The Sendiäna winery is situated at the historic and beautiful Monastery of St Jean on the slopes of Mount Lebanon, and whose building dates back to 1696. Winemaking here can be traced back to 1720, where wine was made for the priests and local villagers. The renaissance of winemaking here began with Father Charbel Hajjar (princle winemaker), whose passion and love of wine lead him to study viticulture and oenology alongside his Biblical studies during his time in France. Returning to the Monastery in 2004 he began planting vines and converted an old goats shed into a professional winery. In 2012 owner Dr Charles Eid established Sendiäna Wines and along with Father Charbel Hajjar and winemaking consultant Ulrich Hoffmann made their very first vintage in 2013. Sendiäna means oak tree, and speaks of the trees which surround the vineyards.
The vineyards themselves are located at high altitude in rocky clay-limestones soils, both on the maritime side of Mount Lebanon and in the drier Bekaa Valley (all at altitudes of 900 – 1200 meters). The high altitude of the vineyards provides the vines with cold winters which are followed by long summers of hot days and cool nights. Vines are not irrigated, but watered by melted Mountain snow in spring and the dew that forms follows the cool nights of summer. These provide ideal conditions for growing richly flavoured sweet grapes for the production of great wines. The varieties grown are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Franc & Mouvedre.
"A deep colored but fresh Lebanese red with lovely sleek black cherry and blackcurrant fruit supported by fine, cedar, spicy notes. There’s a hint of black olive here, and also just a hint of attractive greenness, as well as some lively peppery notes. Showing moderate alcohol and a nice combination of sweet fruit and savory spiciness, this is a really classy effort. It’s not a blockbuster style, but it shows really nice restraint and balance, and should age very well. More old world than new, I reckon."
A vibrant red wine with fine perfumed aromas of ripe blackberries and a hint of spice. The palate is wonderfully fresh and opulent, with flavors of cherry, some cedar, rose and hints of vanilla. A complex wine with present tannins that advance to a balanced elegant structure with a subtle mineral note. Perfect with lamb, game or aubergine in tomato sauce.
