Porseleinberg Swartland Syrah 2017
South Africa's highest rated Syrah - Stunning wine rated 98 Points by Tim Atkin
The 2017 vintage is the most opulent release yet, full of rich olive and smoked meat flavours along with baked blackberries and black pepper spice. The palate is silky with very fine grained tannins, and the wine finishes with a flourish of floral and spiced notes over cassis and blueberries. This is a wine which will benefit from cellaring over a decade or more.
Winemaker’s Tasting Note
Ripe but restrained, red fruit and spice leaning more to the cooler spectrum. Very mineral and cool on the pallet with lots of fruit and a present tannin giving it the purity and fresh sense that is the trademark of the Porseleinberg soils. Very good indication of the growing conditions and the vintage which will definitely evolve very well with time in bottle.
The latest 2017 vintage of the famed Porseleinberg from Boekenhoutskloof has been hailed by Tim Atkin as the best vintage yet. This incredible wine is steadily becoming a real icon, now classed amongst the World's finest wines. The Syrah grapes are grown on a rocky Swartland hillside south-east of Riebeek-Kasteel called Porcelain Mountain, where vineyards have literally been blasted out of the rugged terrain. Winemaker Callie Louw employs a low intervention approach in the vineyard and winery, with the ambition of producing a unique style which showcases the extreme terroir and the effects of each vintage.
