Penny's Hill Skeleton Key Shiraz 2011
Extensive barrique and bottle aged before release, this is a rare chance to buy a premium Aussie Shiraz with maturity. Intense, complex and very enjoyable! 94 Points - James Halliday
Penny's Hill winery was established in 1988 by Tony and Susie Parkinson after they acquired land and established vineyards on foothills at the base of Penny's Hill, east of McLaren Vale in Western Australia, hence the name! They took an early decision to plant their vineyards with narrow-rows of Shiraz, aimed at minimum crops for maximum quality, and with the 1995 vintage they began to bottle and label a small quantity of wine under the distinctive red packaging, behind the slogan 'Proudly Australian. More so McLaren Vale'. This premium estate produces award-winning, fruit driven wines which reflect the outstanding diversity of terroir upon which McLaren Vale has grown its reputation. McLaren Vale enjoys a true maritime climate thanks to its proximity to the ocean and backdrop of gently folding hills. This, in combination with an ancient and diverse geology, ensures generous, elegant and flavoursome wines. Penny's Hill vineyards are hand-tended and hand-pruned with careful canopy management. Located on three estate sites over varied soil types, including black Bay of Biscay, the estate has built an enviable reputation for highly rated Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Merlot grapes. The appointment of winemaker Alexia Roberts, a young, passionate and experienced enthusiast for the region, marks an exciting new era for Penny's Hill - 26 years on from its foundation.
94 Points - James Halliday
"An impressive example of the resilience of McLaren Vale in this vintage, and of adept winemaking; the colour is excellent, and the savoury/earthy/dark chocolate nuances that run through the length of the palate are balanced by the backbone of black fruits. Drink by 2026."
A deliberately long-aged expression of the best of Penny's Hills McLaren Vale vineyard sites, 'Skeleton Key’ is cellared and carefully bottle aged before it is released, ready to enjoy. Aged for 18 months in fine French oak barriques (40% new oak), this is complex and delicious. The aroma is perfumed with spice, over vibrant red berry and blueberry fruit, with cedar and dark chocolate notes. There is a subtle oak spice on the palate which has real fruit intensity, showing true depth and concentration. This tightly structured wine is pure and elegant. The extended ageing make this a rare opportunity to buy and enjoy an aged release from McLaren Vale, and Australia.
