Niepoort Colheita Single Vintage Tawny Port 2005 Halves
92 Parker Points - "it often overachieves and easily exceeded expectations"
The Niepoort family emigrated from the Netherlands to Portugal in the 18th century, and today, Dirk Niepoort runs the firm with a dedication and enthusiasm that makes him one of the most popular figures in the wine trade.
Niepoort excel at Colheita (single vintage tawny) Ports. And this is one of their finest recent vintages. And, of course, it needs no decanting, and keeps well once opened.
Aged in lodge pipes (pipas, 500-550 litre old barrels) for a minimum of seven years, colheitas not only have to display the vintage on the bottle, but also the year the wine was bottled.
"The 2005 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with a long cork. Much darker in color than a bunch of similarly-aged tawnies (including one from Niepoort), this is also nicely concentrated for its age. It shows more complexity, but doesn't seem quite as youthful as most do at this age. That's not bad news, at least today, because it is sturdier and far more intriguing than most young ones, with dark, old-tawny flavors to go with its relatively stern demeanor. There's far more molasses than caramel on first taste. The finish then lingers very respectably for a young tawny. I liked this a lot."
Superb brick red/brown appearance with medium depth of colour. Very clean fresh aroma with a subdued spicy character and a hint of dried fruits. Refreshing seductive flavours on the palate with dried fruits and a lingering nutty velvety finish on the palate. Drinking now but can easily age for many years.
