Tasting notes

The 2018 vintage of the delicious Nielson by Byron Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir is a league apart from many Pinot Noirs of the same price point, offering juiciness alongside a mineral character that is typical of Santa Barbara. This lifted and pure Pinot Noir has an abundance of wild strawberry fruit, a firm bright acidity and some gamey notes. We’re smitten with this perfect partner for lamb cooked pink, duck breast and mushroom dishes.

Discover

In 1984 when Ken Brown founded Byron, his plan seemed simple : produce spectacular Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County. Nielson pays homage to its namesake, Uriel J. Nielson, who in 1964 planted the first commercial vineyard in Santa Barbara County, a region previously considered too cold to grow grapes. Known as a viticulture pioneer, Uriel didn’t heed warnings from neighboring farmers and didn’t flinch in his stance that Santa Barbara County could be one among the top winegrowing regions in the world. The Nielson Vineyard, nestled 18 miles west of the Pacific Ocean, is one of the first vineyard sites in the valley to witness the fog burn off each morning.

In 2003, Jonathan Nagy assumed winemaking duties. His small-lot, hands-on winemaking techniques have helped contribute to Byron’s success. Intensive grape sorting, native yeast fermentations, and lot separation from harvest through winemaking with more than 170 separate batches of Pinot Noir alone – have helped create wines that combine the finesse of Burgundy and the power of California. This has flavours of dark berry, cherry, and floral and mineral hints. The wine spent 16 months in French Oak, 3% of which was new.
