Napier Red Medallion 2013
"All in all, this is a big, powerful wine yet with a deft elegance that makes it all the more appealing and enjoyable." - Alison Flemming MW
Napier is a new shooting star on South Africa’s dynamic wine scene. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Hawequas Mountains, this boutique, family-owned winery has 88 hectares in Wellington, just 70 km to the north-east of Cape Town, and offers a counterpoint to the more well-known areas of Stellenbosch and Paarl. Mountain water and snow melt supplies Napier’s own bore for precision-planned drip irrigation to manage development of each individual varietal, vineyard block and quality level. All work in the vineyards is concentrated on achieving varietal typicité and perfect balance, from the Lion Creek wines for everyday drinking through to Napier’s multiple award-winning icon wine, Red Medallion.
"South Africa is getting quite a name for itself for Bordeaux blends and this limited production Red Medallion has become one of the top cult wines, winning medals in many competitions which underscore its excellence. The blend consists of a firm backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot adding the spice in the form of cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper. The long ageing in new barriques adds further touches of mocha and chocolate with a touch of prune. All in all, this is a big, powerful wine yet with a deft elegance that makes it all the more appealing and enjoyable." - Alison Flemming MW
