Marquis de St Michel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2018
A full bodied Châteauneuf, strong and intense. Powerful black fruits with rosemary and thyme.
This Grenache-dominant blockbuster is full-bodied and richly textured with concentrated flavours that balance the wine's typically high alcohol.
The nose is powerful, delivering black fruits with rosemary and thyme. On the palate, it offers black cherries, strawberry jam and a hint of black olive. With its lengthy ripe fruit finish, this wine really holds its own against richly flavoured dishes, such as roast turkey and all the trimmings.
In the 14th Century, the papacy, which was then in Avignon, chose Châteauneuf-du-Pape as the Pope’s summer residence. Seven successive Popes promoted the production of wine and the development of the vineyards.
The rigour and reliability of the production methods are both a constant element in the history of this vineyard, and helped set the basis for some of the elements required to be awarded AOC status (now AOP, Appellation d'Origine Prôtégée). Châteauneuf-du-Pape was designated as an AOC in 1936.
The blend of grapes in this wine is a classic example of some of the many permitted by the appellation such as Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah as well as lesser known varietals like Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette and Bourboulenc.
