M. Chapoutier Dos Lusiadas Eleivera Branco 2017
A deliciously drinkable Portuguese white from Michel Chapoutier
In 2009, Michel Chapoutier picked out a plot in the Douro Valley. A small – very small – plot of 3 hectares, but full of promise: Eleivera. Here, the winters are tough, the summer a long, dry heatwave. The vines are planted mainly on granite sands of varying depths resulting in a wine that displays a nice taut character on the palate. One plot is composed of schist, which adds smoothness to the blend.
The Eleivera Branco is a blend of native Rabigato, Gouveio, Códega do Larinho and Viosinho grapes which has 6 months lees ageing. It is an elegant, pale yellow in colour with hints of green. The nose is of fresh, fruity peaches and pears with notes of citrus. The palate continues the flavours on the nose with a clean, fresh finish and lovely texture.
