Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Bairrada Tinto 2016
The flagship red wine from legendary Portuguese winemaker Luis Pato
Luis Pato's flagship red comes from a selction of old vineyards and therefore different soiltypes, with all vines over 40 years old (and some much older). This includes a small part coming down from the top Pan and Barrosa cuvees. Stainless steel vinification with a over a year aging in used french barrels results in a fantastic red wine, so very typical of the region and the baga grape variety.
The addition of Bical comes in the form of pressed skins. Luis believes the addition of tannin from white grapes enhances those of the red.
Baga is a Portuguese indigenous grape variety perfectly adapted to the soils and clime of the Bairrada region. This is one of the very best examples of this region and grape with notes and flavours ranging from raspberry and plum to black olive, dark chocolate and vanilla. There is plenty of structure and power here, which is balanced by the classic freshness and lightness of the Baga grape.
