Le Rocche Malatestiane 'Sigismondo', Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore, Emilia Romagna 2016

Tre Bicchieri & Best Value for Money - Gambero Rosso 2018

Le Rocche Malatestiane is located in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast with vineyards situated on the hills overlooking the sea. The wine cooperative was established in 1994, by the merging of the most ancient vine-growing and wine-producing structures of the Rimini Province: the Cantina Riminese and the Cantina Valconca di Morciano. The cooperative takes its name from one of Rimini’s oldest noble families, the Malatesta family. The vineyards are distributed throughout the hills of the Province of Rimini and represent a mosaic of terroirs, with varying altitudes, soil types and influence from the sea. Proud to represent the region and the passionate growers who farm it, the wines from Le Rocche Malatestiane beautifully showcase the Sangiovese grape and the terroirs of Rimini. The Sangiovese grapes come from hillside vineyards near Rimini not far from the Adriatic Sea. The vineyard soils comprise low clay-based topsoil, which are rich in limestone with a rocky subsoil.

Le Rocche Malatestiane 'Sigismondo', Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore, Emilia Romagna 2016

"The 2016 Sangiovese Superiore Sigismondo is truly surprising, not just for its level, but also, and especially, for its style. It offers up linear and close-focused aromas, which are finely embellished with notes of wild berries, watermelon and orange; the mouth is slow, juicy and fresh....considering its excellent price, it's earned our award for 'Best Value for Money'."

Tasting Notes

This 100% Sangiovese is an excellent example of this grape, with warmer and softer characters than its Tuscan counterparts. The aromas drift out of the glass with black fruits, orange peel and hints of savouriness. On the palate it is fruit-forward with plenty of succulent plum and blackberry fruit complimented by fresher red berry flavours, spice and orange. The tannins are silky smooth and it is long and moreish on the finish. A perfect match to lamb, game and Italian charcuterie this is drinking now but will age well for up to 10 years.
