Jim Barry Clare Valley Assyrtiko 2017/18
Australia's first Assyrtiko, Jim Barry have hit the mark - this is devine!
Jim Barry wines need no introduction, however this wine is something new and quite different - and something you simply have to taste! Assyrtiko is a white Greek grape, know especially for wines produced on Santorini. It's a grape which has crisp acidity balanced with rich textured fruit, which Jim Barry found reminded him of Clare Valley Rieslings in style. It's a grape with very high quality potential but one that hasn't travelled widely from its Greek origins. It's been a long path to produce this wine, having imported vine cuttings in 2008 (from Gaia's vineyard, Santorini) which had to be held two years in quarantine as per Australian regulations, before they could even be planted! The 2018 is the third release and is already a new icon on the Australian wine scene.
Lifted floral aromatics are accompanied by intense notes of pear and lime. This Assyrtiko shows great flavour concentration on the palate, with a flinty streak of minerality running through its core of lemon and lime fruit. This is lively and crisp with textured fruit and an endless finish. A perfect match for fresh seafood, try with grilled octopus.
