Hofmann Riesling Trocken 'Vom Roten Stein' Niersteiner 2014

A dry Riesling, a Trocken Riesling, no sugar left after fermentation or just a trace amount, and 12.5% alcohol in this screw cap bottle.
"Jürgen Hofmann really shows what he can do with this stunning and highly expressive Riesling. The iron oxide rich soils give an exotic spiciness in the wine suggesting papaya and passion fruit, with a twist of pink grapefruit and a mineral crispness on the finish. It is dry, vibrant and relatively full-bodied for a Riesling, drinking delightfully now but with the potential to develop for a further 4-6 years. Its fruity, spicy style makes it a perfect partner to spicy dishes, such as Thai green curry, as well as with simple grilled fish or seafood and its crisp acidity means it is a match for anything with a creamy sauce." - Alison Flemming, Master of Wine

Tasting Notes

‘Good hefty nose redolent of the red stone of Nierstein responsible for this wine. Earthy, warm, but bone dry. Really fun to drink and, especially, to match to food. Good Value’ - 16/20 (Distinguished) - Jancis Robinson MW. www.jancisrobinson.com “A dry Riesling, a Trocken Riesling, no sugar left after fermentation or just a trace amount, and 12.5% alcohol in this screw cap bottle. On the nose – it’s lovely, because it has a kind of mealy richness and a weight and succulence as well as fresh sliced apple and sliced pear aromas and there’s just hint of something tropical here, too, a hint of mango also on the nose, giving it lots of depth, lots of interest. On the palate, the first thing that strikes you for a German Riesling is the weight and mouth feel of the wine, it’s not heavy but it’s a medium bodied wine with a bit of texture and a bit of mouth filling viscosity, but the flavours are ultra fresh. There’s more of that nectarine, there’s more of that juicy mango kind of character, but much more than that, it has a lovely delineation of citrus running through it, and a finish that is sharp, dry and fresh, really cleanses the palate, really gives this wine great second sip appeal where you’re ready to just take a second mouthful because it finishes so dry and fresh. It’s a great little wine, great for sipping on its own, but equally a really good partner to delicate fish and seafood, to river fish and really nice summery light salad and seafood dishes – a great partner for those.” - Tom Cannavan, Wine of the Week, 12th July 2015
