Gauchezco Oro Malbec 2013
A stunning, deeply rich wine which is the premium Malbec expression from Gauchezco
Originally founded in 1881 by the then Governor of Mendoza, Tiburcio Benegas, the very same who’s name graces one of Argentina’s most famous estates - Benegas. In fact much of the fruit used by the Benegas winery is supplied from Gauchezco’s own estate grown grapes. Gauchezco is now owned by the ever entrepreneurial American Eric Anesi and his Father. Eric moved to Argentina at the age of 27 to take over the running of the estate (which at the time was quite run down) and supervised the modernisation of the winery, whilst retaining the same locals who had always worked the land. Eric has quite literally learned his trade from the ground up, picking grapes in the vineyards with the workers who considered him crazy for doing it for ‘fun’. Eric also commited himself to speaking fluent Spanish, and has devoured any and every bit of information and practical experience he could. The locals who work in the winery are always happy to take visitors on a horseback ‘Gaucho’ tour ending with a traditional Argentinian open pit BBQ.
Gauchezco winemaker Mauricio Vegetti Lui won first place at the coveted Winemaker Sub 40 awards, which celebrates Argentina's best young winemakers.
"The very elegant and harmonious 2013 Oro Malbec Appellation Gualtallary matured in used and larger oak barrels to preserve the character of the grapes, place and vintage. It's a huge improvement over the 2012 harvest, with great freshness and poise, with clean, floral aromas and a sensual mouthfeel with ultra-fine tannins and very good freshness. No doubt the conditions of the year helped to achieve a very elegant wine."
100% Malbec. This estate Malbec represents the maximum expression of Gauchezco wines. A sumptuous sip of cassis and cherry followed by layers of chocolate, dulce de leche and coffee on the palate. Excellent with steak.
