Eguren Ugarte Rioja Maturana 2016
Another of Eguren Ugarte's incredibly well made single variety Rioja wines this time from the rarely seen Maturana Tinta grape
Eguren Ugarte is a family company with a winemaking history dating back to 1870, when the current owner’s great-great grandfather began to cultivate and mature his own vines in the Rioja Alavesa just outside the lovely medieval hill town of Laguardia. All of the Ugarte Riojas are estate grown and bottled, many on the same original plots using grapes from decedents of those very first vines. Maturana Tinta is a variety recently redicovered which is not cultivated anywhere else in the world. Late budding and with a short cycle, it produces very small grapes and bunches. It produces high quality wines with very strong colours and aromas.
The Maturana Tinta grape is not grown anywhere else in the world other than Rioja, making it a very interesting grape to support the uniqueness and diversity of the region. The wine has a rich purple colour in the glass with a nose which still feels distictintly Rioja with red berry, pepper and balsamic hints. On the palate it is mid weight with delicious crunchy red fruit, good acidity and notes of bell pepper and spice. This is a great match for tomato based tapas dishes, game or lamb. Drink now or until 2026.
