Pale lemon in colour. Clean and bright aromas of green apple, lemon, lime and pineapple shine through on the nose. On the palate, a vibrant acidity, characteristic of the Verdejo variety, carries the aromas onto the crisp and balanced finish.
The 2019 vintage in Rueda was characterised by dry conditions throughout the growing season. Due to the lack of rain, disease pressure was low in the vineyards and yields were lower than usual. The harvest took place between mid-September and mid-October and the quality of the grapes harvested was excellent, the smaller berries had excellent concentration of flavour and crisp acidity.
The grapes are grown in vineyards situated at 600 to 800 metres above sea level, where the trellis system has been adopted for 15 to 30 years. The soils are composed of gravel and are poor in organic matter with low water retention, allowing for stress on the vines, producing greater concentration of both fruit and complexity within the berries.
Duquesa de Valladolid is Sogrape’s project in Rueda, the Spanish region which is currently in vogue for crisp and aromatic white wines. Winemaker Luisa Freire is an expert in handling aromatic grape varieties, having previously worked at Santiago Ruiz in Rías Baixas. She uses her viticultural and winemaking know-how to elevate the aromatic intensity of Verdejo to a new level.
