Dopff et Irion Gewurztraminer 2016
Jane MacQuitty's 100 Best Wines for Winter
The Gewürztraminer grape offers an extraordinary sensory experience, delivering a kaleidoscope of aromas with a voluptuous and exuberant palate. It makes an ideal apéritif wine or a great partner to exotically spiced dishes or strong cheeses such as Munster. Dopff et Irion is a renowned producer based in Riquewihr, Alsace. Founded in 1945, they have purchased some of the local area's best vineyards, as well as Riquewihr castle. Their wines won trophies at last year's IWC competition and have been served in the Palais de L'Elysee and Buckingham Palace! They also remain fantastically well priced.
This Gewurtztraminer is a generously aromatic wine with a distinctive lychee note, and a suggestion of Turkish delight (rose petal). This follows through onto the rounded palate, which is gently off-dry with a hint of spice and floral on the mid-palate. The finish is clean with a light refreshing spritz.
