Dominique Gruhier, Bourgogne Epineuil, Domaine de l’Abbaye 2015
Far and away one of the most dynamic domaines of the small appellation of Bourgogne Epineuil, in its relatively isolated and unknown location north-east of Chablis, Domaine de l’Abbaye du Petit Epineuil's owner/winemaker Dominique Gruhier has made a speciality of various cuvées of Bourgogne Pinot Noir that rival the quality of better known names further south in the Côte d’Or.
These are wines with fruit and elegance that blossom after 5 to 7 years – from very steep (40% gradient), south-east-facing vines on stony soil. Gruhier’s wines show classic minerality but at the same time are ‘très gourmand’ with their winning combination of freshness and purity of fruit.
"Fresh, spicy, savoury with some oak, showing sweet cranberry and raspberry flavours and the restraint and cool elegance of northern Burgundy. Complex and well balanced, with fine tannins, tangy acidity and lovely nuance. A Pinot that refreshes and caresses the palate at the same time."
This Bourgogne Epineuil comes from Dominique Gruhier's 8ha of younger Pinot Noir vines, situated on Clay & Kimmeridgian limestone soils. This wine is fresh and vibrant with plenty of juicy red and dark fruits gracing the palate. Although lighter because of it's more northerly location, this packs a punch with good tannic structure and a mouthwatering acidity that keeps you diving back into the glass. Match with hard cheeses, game or lamb. Drinking now until 2025.
