Clos La Gaffeliere Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016
A fantastic Saint-Emilion Grand Cru - awarded 91-92 points by James Suckling.
A Bordeaux blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. A great wine that will keep and continue to improve for 10-15 years. It is a crisp wine with ripe fruity notes and mineral nuances. With lovely breadth on the palate and a tight tannic structure, this Clos La Gaffelière is already tasty and delicious!
This is the second wine of highly respected Chateau La Gaffeliere, crafted from 38 hectares of vines with an average age of 28 years.
The summer was hot in 2016, without being sweltering, and above all very dry: between July and August, the weather
station at Gaffelière registered only 5mm of rain... The clay soil at Gaffelière favours deep rooting by the vines and the work by their viticultural teams to maintain balance allowed the harvest to proceed despite these climatic challenges.
As so often, Bordeaux worked its magic... During September, two storms unblocked the ripening process, and this was followed by a real Indian summer, with a succession of cool nights and hot days, favouring the slow refining of the tannins. This meant that the vineyard was in a good state of health and they were able to wait for the optimum picking date for each vineyard parcel.
