Chateau Brown Pessac-Leognan Grand Vin De Graves 2015 Magnum
An elegant and classy Bordeaux from an historical estate and an excellent vintage in Magnum form
The history of Brown goes back almost one thousand years, with traces of vines here as early as the 12th century. Two centuries later, during the Hundred Years’ War between the Kingdoms of England (the Plantagenets) and France, Aquitaine and its vineyards were to remain in English hands for quite some time. Château Brown owes its name to a rich Scottish wine trader, John Lewis Brown, who settled in Bordeaux shortly after the Revolution, in 1795. The former Château Barrière officially took the name Château Brown at the end of the 18th century.
Despite its long history among the great Bordeaux wines, it was only at the end of the 20th century that Château Brown was finally restored to glory. Guided by cereals-industry businessman Bernard Barthe, who became its owner in 1994, the estate undertook a genuine renaissance with a programme of considerable investments in the vines and facilities. With the focus on wine quality, the first investments were made in the vineyard, replanting many plots, installing an underground drainage network, renovating and extending the buildings and buying in more barrels. The wines of Château Brown have built themselves a sound reputation and found their rightful place once again among winelovers’ cellars.
"The medium garnet-purple colored 2015 Brown has loads of crushed black berries and red currants notions with notes of tilled loam, dried herbs and meat. Medium-bodied, firm and chewy in the mouth, it has a lively backbone and herbal lift to the finish."
"The 2015 Château Brown has an opulent bouquet with sensual red cherries, crushed strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine thread of acidity, and impressive weight and body in the body. It needs to develop a little more nuance and complexity on the finish, yet it is harmonious and feels lithe. A seductive Château Brown for sure, one that will give at least a decade of pleasure and will probably be more approachable than some of its peers." - 90-92pts Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
"Silky but taut tannins – a superb example from this château. Vanilla bean oak spice and no trace of dryness; elegance and balance with a sexy flourish. Medium drinking, great pleasure." - 92pts Decanter Magazine
