Champagne Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2009
Only the 18th vintage release, this iconic Champagne was created as homage to Sir Winston Churchill and mindful of the qualities that he revered in a Champagne: robustness, a full-bodied character and perfect maturity.
The exact blend of this Champagne is a closely guarded family secret, but the Pinot Noir grapes contribute to the structure and character of the wine, while the Chardonnay provides the finesse and elegance that distinguishes this Champagne as world-class.
On the nose you'll be greeted by subtle hints of brioche and sweet spice combined with citrus flavours and floral fragrances.
As the Champagne opens in the glass, it becomes more powerful and develops complex nuances of acacia blossom and honeycomb, that is creamy on the palate and supported by notes of fresh fruit. Exquisite.
Pol Roger, famous for being Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne of choice, is an iconic family-owned Champagne house that has been producing world-class Champagnes since 1849. Over it's 170+ year history the house has built a reputation for producing Champagnes that have a distinct and recognisable finesse and elegance, and that in fact continue to only get better with age.
The relationship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to a providential meeting at a luncheon given by the British Ambassador to France some months after the liberation of Paris at which was served the sumptuous 1928 vintage of Pol Roger. Attending the lunch was the beautiful Odette Pol-Roger as well as the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, with whom she struck up an instant rapport.
A friendship was born which continued until Churchill's death, creating links between the Pol-Roger and Churchill families which are still as strong to this day.
Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvee in homage to Sir Winston Churchill mindful of the qualities that he revered in a Champagne: robustness, a full-bodied character and perfect maturity. This 2009 wintage is no exception.
