Brancaia Ilatraia Rosso Maremma Toscana 2014 Magnum

93pts - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

It was in 1981, when the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with the at the time abandoned Brancaia estate (Castellina in Chianti) and purchased it. Only two years later, Brancaia made the first rank in an important Chianti Classico tasting and then rapidly gained international recognition. This lead to a continuous extension of the activities resulting in purchasing the Poppi estate (Radda in Chianti) in 1989, followed in 1998 by the founding of Brancaia in Maremma, only 10km from the Mediterranean coastline.

Since 1998 Barbara Widmer, oenologist and daughter of the founders, has been responsible for the winemaking as well as for the vineyards on all three estates - she thereby relies on the consultancy of the famous oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Today Brancaia is one of Tuscany’s leading wineries, receiving important national and international awards every year.

Brancaia Ilatraia Rosso Maremma Toscana 2014 Magnum

"The 2014 Ilatraia is a terrific wine that represents a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc. This is a darkly saturated and rich Tuscan blend that delivers so much pleasure on all levels. There is softness, intensity, complexity and length. This is a stunning wine with excellent engineering and execution. This is definitely a wine I will remember."

Tasting Notes

After working on their new estate in the coastal Maremma for 10 years, Brancaia have learnt a lot about the terroir. The age of the vines and new varietals available allowed for additional opportunities and the resulting blend is Brancaia's Ilatraia – this wine is elegant, composed by grape varietals that ripen gently every year in the Maremma even without irrigation - 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot, 20% Cabernet Franc. This is an intense, elegant and terroir focused wine. Drink now or savour for many years. One to match with bold flavoured meat dishes.
