Bethany Creek Shiraz 2017
An excellent value Barossa Shiraz - a new wine to the UK.
Today Bethany Wines are being run by fifth and sixth generations of the same Schrapel family, who planted their first vineyards in 1852. Geoff and Robert’s philosophy is to produce exceptional, elegant, food-friendly wines - wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Barossa Ranges.
The eastern ridge of the Barossa Valley provides a unique sub regional expression of Shiraz from this great wine growing area. Sourced from Schrapel family vineyards and those of a close neighbour and friend, this wine has all the hallmarks of this special place.
The fruit picked from Bethany Vineyards is from old vines of up to 40 years old which are very low yielding and produce fruit of great intensity and flavour. Traditional viticulture practices are applied in these vineyards with vines hand pruned and often hand picked. The grapes from each individual vineyard are kept separate throughout the winemaking process until the final blending. The characteristics of the selected parcels of wine for the Shiraz blend display soft fine tannins and fresh red berry characters.
The winter and spring of 2016 were wet and even December was wetter than average. The growing season for the 2017 vintages was cool (December) or average (January) with brief periods of rain in January to keep the vines refreshed. 2017 was a balanced, cooler vintage in the Barossa with a long ripening period which led to reds developing exceptional colour and tannic framework along with a deep fruit profile and aromatic intensity.
French and American oak hogsheads were used for a maturation period of 12 months before a final selection and blending, with further time in stainless steel to marry together.
