Alpha Domus The Aviator 2015
A superlative Bordeaux blend grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle near Hastings in New Zealand's Hawkes Bay.
The Alpha Domus winery was established by two generations of the Ham family. Their vision began in 1990 with the purchase of bare land in Hawke's Bay's Bridge Pa district and planting began in 1991. The name Alpha Domus was inspired by the first initial of each of the first names of the family members; Anthonius, Leonarda, Paulus, Henrikus and Anthonius (ALPHA); Domus is Latin for house. From their vineyards, the Alpha Domus produce world-class wines from a wide range of varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier and Syrah. The commitment is to produce premium quality wines that are true to varietal character and are a reflection of their unique terroir. Their wines are single vineyard, estate grown, and made at the onsite winery.
The estate itself is in the vicinity of an historic airfield, important for training pilots throughout New Zealand's aviation history. The aircraft used was the de Havilland Tiger Moth which is depicted on the Alpha Domus labels. Henri has a passion for flying and holds a commercial pilot's license.
Aroma of berry fruits, spice, cassis, cedar and cigarbox notes, complemented by fine oak. On the Palate sweet rounded berry fruit flavours of blackberry and wild brambles, mocha, spice, savoury olive notes and fine oak tannin. This wine shows a complex bouquet, silken texture and firm structure.
