Agostino Pavia 'La Marescialla' Barbera d'Asti Superiore 2016
97 Points, Platinum Award at the 2019 Decanter World Wine Awards - an outstanding Italian red!
Very deep ruby, almost opaque. This has an intense aroma with morello cherry, olive and spiced oak. The palate is rich and rounded, certainly full-bodied, with blackberry compote, damson, olive, baked cherry, dark chocolate and very ripe tannins. This is a bold and powerful wine, to enjoy now and over the next 5-7 years
The 'La Marescialla' is the top-bottling from Pavia, and really showcases what can be achieved with Barbera when it's given full attention and the chance to shine. Brothers Giuseppe and Mauro Pavia have 10 hectares of vines (of up to 50 years old) in prime locations on ideal clay soils in the Asti area. Here rather than Piedmont's famous Nebbiolo grape it's Barbera which gets all the attention and best sites, and as a result you find the very best wines. The 'La Marescialla' is aged in French Allier oak barriques for 12 months (50% new), and then for a further year in bottle before release. Awarded 97 Points and a Platinum Medal in the 2019 Decanter World Wine Awards, "This is a cracking Barbera... Delicious stuff!"
