Penny’s Hill was established in 1988 by Tony and Susie Parkinson after they acquired land and established vineyards on foothills at the base of Penny’s Hill, east of McLaren Vale in Western Australia – hence the name! They took an early decision to plant their vineyards with narrow-rows of Shiraz, aimed at minimum crops for maximum quality, and with the 1995 vintage they began to bottle and label a small quantity of wine under the distinctive ‘red dot’ packaging, behind the slogan 'Proudly Australian. More so McLaren Vale'.  This premium estate produces award-winning, fruit driven wines which reflect the outstanding diversity of terroir upon which McLaren Vale has grown its reputation. McLaren Vale enjoys a true maritime climate thanks to its proximity to the ocean and backdrop of gently folding hills. This, in combination with an ancient and diverse geology, ensures generous, elegant and flavoursome wines. Penny’s Hill vineyards are hand-tended and hand-pruned with careful canopy management. Located on three estate sites over varied soil types, including black Bay of Biscay, the estate has built an enviable reputation for highly rated Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Merlot grapes. The appointment of winemaker Alexia Roberts, a young, passionate and experienced enthusiast for the region, marks an exciting new era for Penny’s Hill - 26 years on from its foundation.

The 'Cracking Black' Shiraz Pays homage to the black Bay of Biscay soils which contribute elegance and finesse to the mighty Shiraz wines of the region. Indeed, the wine’s name is a reference to the relatively infertile, cracking, grey-black soil upon which the hand-tended Shiraz patch grows. The fissures which occur as the black soil cracks apart, sever surplus root structure; a process which naturally lessens vigour and enhances ultimate grape quality.

The wine spent 16 months in French oak barrels and offers red berry, dark cherry and mulberry fruits coupled with liquorice, plum with hints of spice, aniseed, chocolate and lightly toasted French oak. The palate is generous and rich but with elegance, fine tannins are well integrated and follow through to a long satisfying finish. Enjoy to 2030.

"Neat and composed and yet with all the power you could ever need and want. Dark chocolate, dates, fresh blackberry and licorice notes run proudly through the palate, aided and abetted by cords of tannin"  - 95 Points - James Halliday's 2017 Wine Companion
