Yealands Estate is the largest vineyard in private ownership in New Zealand. Based in the Awatere to the south east of Marlborough’s Wairau Plains, the estate encompasses 1000 Ha of viticultural land in the rolling downs of Awatere Valley, with smaller vineyard blocks near Blenheim. 500 hectares are currently under vine. Founder and principal Peter Yealands is one of the region’s most experienced vineyard developers and is renowned and respected for his innovative vineyard management techniques and technologies. Since 1998 he has developed seven of his own vineyard sites at various locations throughout Marlborough, as well as several vineyards under contract for other companies. The winery is the first to be built entirely under the New Zealand Green Building Council’s accreditation programme and is aiming for a 6 Green Star rating (world leadership). Pale lemon with green hues. Stone fruit, honeysuckle and spice dominate the nose. the palate is rich and textured, showing varietal definition with notes of pepper and spice, which integrate well with fine acidity, that provides a backbone to the wine.
"Green fruit aplenty, steely mouthfeel, a bit of stone fruit. Not sure I would guess this as a Grüner - Albariño maybe." 16 points, Richard Hemming - JancisRobinson.com, December 2012
"White grape Grüner Veltliner is rarely found outside its Austrian home, but an increasing number are popping up in New Zealand. The variety's characteristic white pepper adds savoury interest to the pristine peachy fruit and crackling acidity." David Williams, The Observer - The Guardian, March 2013
